Kyrgyzstan Fact File

Kyrgyzstan is a high altitude country with its capital Bishkek at around 800m and the mean average height of topography at around 2,000m. It is nothing to have to ride through passes at 4 or 5,000m so be prepared and have a range of clothing (layers) to deal with the situation. There are vast open expanses where the tundra rolls on forever on which you will drive dirt or sandy off road trails all with a back drop of stunning mountain peaks.

On top of this, you have the chance to experience the nomadic way of life by staying in a yurt camp, viewing traditional games and hunting practises. A large loop tour will start in Ala-Too square in Bishkek and get you high into the hills then, skirt along the shores of lake Issyk Kul (the second largest mountain lake in the world). If you have time to be able to take in the Fergana Valley.

Kyrgyzstan FAQ

Most people can enter Kyrgyzstan without a formal visa for at least 30 days. Visas are available on arrival for some nationalities and e-visas are available for people from all countries. You can find out more here: Kyrgyzstan Visa Requirements.
Kyrgyzstan has signed both the 1949 and 1968 Convention on International Driving Permits. Therefore, you can use either.
You do not need to show any proof of a Covid vaccination if you wish to enter Kyrgyzstan.
Due to Kyrgyzstan being at high altitude, most of the country is above 1,000m, it is quite cold and has a long Winter. The Summer months are when the snow has melted and and the high passes are open and navigable. You can ride at any time from June to early October, but July and August are the most comfortable times. Needless to say, you need to book well in advance to secure these dates.
It is one of the safest countries in the world with very little crime. However, it always pays to be alert and not walk alone late in the evening as in any other country. Always beware in bazaars as they can be infested with pickpockets.
The only issue that should concern you is being at altitude. Kyrgyzstan is a mountainous country with an average height above sea level of around 2000m. You will ride on passes that are higher than this and so you should be aware of what it feels like to be a little out of breath. You may need to consult a doctor before booking your trip.
Try to bring as much as possible. We will advise you on the weather conditions when you book your tour/rental and this will inform you as to what you should bring. Nearly all items are available here but the supply is sporadic and sizes tend to be more for the Asian market. Bring your helmet, jacket, riding pants, boots, gloves and waterproofs as these are essential and size dependant. We can provide a limited range of gear and sizes so it is best to discuss this with us in advance as we cannot guarantee to have what you need. There is NO NEED to bring bungees, waterproof bags, phone holders etc… unless you really wish to.
There are no bans on the import and use of drones in the country other than the usual ones of not using them around airports and areas of national security. The maximum weight of a drone should not exceed 10kg and you should fly no higher than 100m above ground level. However, bear in mind that due to the nature of our tour, riding long distances, you may not get much chance to use it.
If you take a prescription medication, you should bring enough for your trip. Most over the counter medications can be easily found but they are often under different names.
Rentals of quality motorbikes for touring range from 80 to 120 usd per day depending on the type of bike and the duration of the rental. We have a range of bikes available here.
Kyrgyzstan is not the easiest country to be vegetarian in due to the predominantly carnivorous nature of the diet and there being a lot of meat and bread. However, many restaurants and hotels are happy to remove meat from dishes and there are many vegetables and fruits available. If you are sourcing fruit and vegetables yourself be careful to wash them thoroughly. It would be wise to bring a few snacks just in case.
Yes, Internet is quite cheap in the country. The more populated cities and tourist spots will have good access. Many guest houses and cafes will have free wifi available. However, once on tour you will find there is little access to Internet or Wifi.
Homestays often offer a separate bed for guests and this will have either beds, or mattresses on the floor and there will be blankets and towels. The toilets are often outside and may be western style or squat, so prepare. You will be given breakfast in a homestay and you can also order lunch and dinner if you wish. Yurts usually do not beds but have a thick mattress on the floor. They will be for 4 – 5 people depending on the size. The toilets are outdoors and are usually not western. There will not be hot water or electricity unless they are close to a town and then only occasionally. If the yurt is at altitude it will usually have a small stove for heating and this may be left on all night.
