Kyrgyzstan Motorcycle Touring FAQ

Most travellers can enter Kyrgyzstan visa-free for up to 30 or 60 days, depending on their nationality. For those who require a visa, it can usually be obtained on arrival, or you can apply for an e-visa online in advance. Always check the laws regarding your specific nationality before traveling.
Yes, you should have an International Driving Permit (IDP) when riding in Kyrgyzstan. The country recognizes both the 1949 and 1968 Conventions on Road Traffic, which means you can use either version of the IDP. This document acts as an official translation of your national driver’s license and is useful for communicating with local authorities.

It’s important to carry both your IDP and your national license, as rental agencies and law enforcement may ask to see them. Having an IDP ensures that your license is recognized and helps prevent misunderstandings during your travels.
The best season for motorcycle tours in Kyrgyzstan is from June to September. During these months, the weather is generally warm and dry, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F), making it ideal for riding.

Outside of this period, temperatures can drop significantly, especially in the mountainous regions, and roads may be affected by snow or rain.
Internet access in Kyrgyzstan’s major towns and cities is good, with Wi-Fi widely available in hotels, cafes, and restaurants. Mobile data SIM cards are affordable and easy to come by.

In rural or remote areas, however, internet access can be limited or unavailable, so it’s advisable to plan accordingly if you need to stay connected.
In Kyrgyzstan, English is not widely spoken, especially in rural areas. In major cities like Bishkek and Osh, you will find some English speakers, particularly among younger people and those working in the tourism and hospitality sectors. However, outside of urban areas, communication might be more challenging, as Russian and Kyrgyz are the dominant languages.
Cash is widely used in Kyrgyzstan, especially for small transactions and in rural areas. The Kyrgyz Som (KGS) is the official currency. Credit and debit cards are accepted in some hotels, restaurants, and shops in cities like Bishkek and Osh, but cash is often preferred. ATMs are available in urban areas for cash withdrawals.
Road rules and etiquette in Kyrgyzstan may differ from what you’re used to. It might take some time to adjust, so exercise extra caution and stay alert to ensure a safe ride.
We offer a pretty good range of dual-sports and tourers in Kyrgyzstan, available for pickup in Bishkek. Damage waiver and local motorcycle tour guide can be added as optional extras.
